Terms of Service
Last updated: April 27, 2026
1. Service Description
Universes is an AI-powered text adventure and character chat platform that lets users create universes, characters, and interactive stories. The service composes prompts and routes them to third-party AI providers via the Vercel AI Gateway. Today that includes Mistral models (Mistral Small for chat, character roleplay, world evolution, and memory; Mistral Large for one-shot world generation on paid tiers), Google Gemini 2.5 Flash for avatar identity captioning, and Black Forest Labs FLUX Kontext Max for image generation. These providers and models may be changed, replaced, or upgraded at any time without notice — output style, latency, and quality may vary as a result. By using Universes, you agree to these Terms of Service.
2. Eligibility
Universes is an 18+ adult platform. You must be at least 18 years old to create or use an account. By signing up you confirm that you meet this requirement.
We do not collect, verify, or store your date of birth. We rely on your self-attestation at signup, combined with the platform-level safeguards in §8 (Hard Content Limits) — most importantly the absolute prohibition on content involving minors. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts where we have credible reason to believe the user is under 18 or has misrepresented their age.
3. User Accounts
To use Universes, you must create an account by providing a unique display name, valid email address, and password, or by signing in through Google OAuth. Your display name is permanent and cannot be changed after registration. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account.
You agree to:
- Provide accurate and complete registration information
- Confirm at signup that you are 18 or older
- Keep your login credentials secure and confidential
- Notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account
- Accept responsibility for all activities conducted through your account
- Not share, sell, transfer, or allow anyone else to use your account
4. Subscriptions and Billing
Universes offers three subscription tiers. Daily message limits are enforced separately for universe prompts and character chat messages. Monthly caps apply to universe creation and image generation. Image generation is a paid-only feature — see §9.
- Drifter ($0) — 10 universe prompts and 20 character messages per day; up to 3 new universes per month; image generation is not available on this tier.
- Explorer ($6.99/week, $19.99/month, or $199.99/year) — 100 universe prompts and 100 character messages per day; up to 15 new universes per month; 10 generated images per month.
- Voyager ($9.99/week, $29.99/month, or $299.99/year) — 300 universe prompts and 300 character messages per day; up to 50 new universes per month; 30 generated images per month.
Billing terms:
- All payment processing is handled by Stripe. By subscribing, you also agree to Stripe's terms and conditions.
- Subscription fees are charged at the beginning of each billing period and are non-refundable except as required by applicable law.
- You may cancel your subscription at any time from account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you keep access to paid features until then.
- We may change subscription pricing with reasonable notice. New prices apply only to new subscriptions and renewals; existing subscribers remain on the price stored on their subscription at sign-up until they cancel or change tiers, at which point the current published price applies on the next sign-up.
- Daily message limits reset every UTC day. Monthly universe-creation and image-generation caps reset on the first UTC day of each calendar month.
- Failed image generations are not charged against your cap. Only pending and successful generations count. If a generation errors at the provider or stalls for more than five minutes, the row is marked failed and your slot is automatically refunded.
5. Content Ownership
Your Content: You retain ownership of the universes, characters, personas, lorebook entries, scenarios, and other creative content you author on Universes. We do not claim ownership over your user-generated content.
License Grant: By using the service, you grant Universes a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide license to store, process, and transmit your content as necessary to operate the platform. This includes sending your content to the third-party AI providers listed in §1 to generate AI responses, captions, and images. This license exists solely to provide you with the service.
AI-Generated Content: You own the AI-generated text and images produced for you through the service, to the extent we hold any rights in them, and you may use that output freely (commercially or non-commercially), subject to applicable law and the upstream providers' terms. Ownership is non-exclusive — the same or similar output may be produced for other users from similar prompts, and we make no guarantees of originality or uniqueness. We make no guarantees regarding the accuracy, quality, or suitability of AI output.
6. AI-Generated Content Disclaimer
Universes uses third-party artificial intelligence to generate text and images. AI-generated content may contain inaccuracies, inconsistencies, hallucinations, or unexpected output, and the views expressed by an AI character do not represent the views of Universes or its operators.
You acknowledge that AI-generated content is produced algorithmically and should not be relied upon as factual, professional, medical, legal, or expert advice of any kind.
7. Content Policy
Universes is a single-tier adult platform. We do not categorize characters by content rating, do not require an opt-in toggle, and do not filter what AI characters will write based on tier or preference. Romance, conflict, darkness, morally complex scenarios, and explicit consenting-adult content are all permitted in the service, framed only by the hard limits in §8.
By signing up you confirmed that you are 18 or older (§2). All content in the platform is built for an adult audience.
8. Hard Content Limits
The following are absolute, non-negotiable limits enforced at the prompt level (the model is instructed to refuse them in every chat) and at the platform level (input filters and provider safety filters apply). They are not author advisory — generating, requesting, or attempting to elicit them is a violation of these Terms and grounds for immediate account termination:
- No content involving minors. No sexual, sexualized, or otherwise harmful content involving minors or any character described, depicted, or implied to be under 18 — in chat text, generated images, character definitions, lorebooks, or anywhere else on the platform. Image-generation prompts mentioning minors are rejected at the input boundary before any provider sees them. This is enforced regardless of fictional framing.
- No real-world violence instructions, terrorism planning, or operational details for illegal weapons.
- No real people's private personal information (home addresses, phone numbers, government identifiers, and similar).
- No encouragement of suicide or detailed self-harm methods. If you are in crisis, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (US) or your local emergency services.
Our commitment on minor content: We will never knowingly store the content of a minor. If we become aware that an account holder is under 18, or that a chat, character, image, or other artifact on the platform involves a minor in a manner that violates the rule above, we will remove the content and the responsible account from our systems and from our backups, and we will report to law enforcement when applicable law requires it. If you become aware of any such content, report it to us immediately and we will act.
9. Image Generation
Image generation is a paid-only feature. Drifter (free) accounts cannot generate images and will see an upgrade prompt where the +image control would otherwise appear. Paid tiers (Explorer, Voyager) get the monthly caps disclosed in §4.
- Images are generated through the Vercel AI Gateway, routing to Black Forest Labs' FLUX Kontext Max model by default. The active model may change without notice as we tune quality and cost; the override env var is documented in the codebase.
- When a character has an avatar, the avatar image is sent to FLUX Kontext Max as a face/identity reference so the generated scene preserves that character's likeness. A short identity caption describing the avatar is generated once by Google Gemini 2.5 Flash and cached on the character to improve future generations.
- Generated images are stored on Vercel Blob storage and served from public URLs. Treat any image you share into a chat as content that may be retained on our infrastructure.
- Hard input filter on minors. Any image-generation prompt mentioning a minor — direct or implied — is rejected at the input boundary before any provider sees it. Black Forest Labs also applies its own safety filter on top, and may refuse other prompts at its discretion.
- Failed generations do not count against your monthly cap; only pending and successful generations do. If a generation gets stuck for more than five minutes it is automatically marked failed and your slot is refunded.
10. Acceptable Use
You agree not to use Universes to:
- Create, store, or distribute content that is illegal under applicable law
- Violate any of the hard content limits in §8
- Harass, abuse, threaten, or intimidate other users or individuals
- Attempt to bypass, prompt-inject, or otherwise circumvent the input filters or any other safety control of the platform — particularly the minor-content filter
- Share, sell, lease, or transfer your account, or let another person use it
- Distribute malware, spam, or other harmful content through the platform
- Impersonate another person or entity, including real people for whom you do not have permission
- Use the service to infringe on the intellectual property rights of others
- Engage in any activity that disrupts or interferes with the operation of the service
- Use automated tools, bots, scrapers, or scripts to access the service without our express written permission
We reserve the right to remove content and suspend or terminate accounts that violate this policy, with or without notice depending on severity.
11. Service Availability and Third-Party Providers
We strive to keep Universes available and reliable, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. The service may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, updates, outages at our infrastructure or upstream AI providers, or other circumstances beyond our control.
Universes depends on third-party AI providers routed through the Vercel AI Gateway (currently including Mistral, Google, and Black Forest Labs). These providers may change their pricing, models, safety filters, latency, or availability at any time, and we may switch providers or models in response. The character of AI output — voice, style, refusal behavior, image fidelity — may change as a result.
We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the service at any time, with or without notice. We are not liable for any modification, suspension, or discontinuation of the service.
12. Data and Privacy
Operating Universes requires storing data about you and your activity, including: your email, display name, hashed password, profile image and bio, marketing-email and product-update preferences, two-factor status, subscription tier and Stripe customer reference, the universes, characters, lorebook entries, and personas you create, your character chats (full message history, derived memory, pinned messages), the avatar captions generated for your characters, and the prompts, models, ratings, and URLs of every image you generate (including failed attempts). Our handling of this data is described in our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these Terms by reference.
13. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Universes and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, revenue, or profits, arising from your use of the service.
Our total liability for any claim arising from or related to the service shall not exceed the amount you have paid to us in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim.
14. Termination
You may terminate your account at any time. Drifter (free) accounts can self-delete from account settings, which permanently removes your user record and cascades to your adventures, characters, chats, lorebook entries, personas, and image-generation history. Paid subscribers (Explorer, Voyager) must first cancel their Stripe subscription from account settings; once the subscription has lapsed and the tier returns to Drifter at the end of the current billing period, the in-app delete control becomes available. We may suspend or terminate your account and access to the service at our discretion if you violate these Terms — including the hard limits in §8, the acceptable-use rules in §10, or any attempt to circumvent the age gate or content filters — or for any other reason we deem necessary to protect the service, our providers, or other users.
Upon termination, your right to use the service ceases immediately. We may delete your data in accordance with our Privacy Policy. Sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including content limits, ownership, liability, and dispute resolution) will remain in effect.
15. Changes to These Terms
We may revise these Terms of Service from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms.
We encourage you to review these terms periodically to stay informed about your rights and obligations.
16. Governing Law
These Terms of Service are governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of the service shall be resolved through good-faith negotiation or, if necessary, through the appropriate legal channels in the relevant jurisdiction.
